What is Dating Violence?

Dating violence is the abuse of one partner in a dating relationship by the other partner, which can include harmful words or any act designed to hurt or control the other.

• Dating Violence occurs in every economic class, race, and ethnic group.

• Dating Violence is NOT caused by stress, alcohol, genetics, or by you. Abuse is NOT about anger, it is about CONTROL!

• Abusers may apologize for their actions, but once abuse starts, it seldom stops without intervention.

Dating Violence is serious threat in today’s society:

• The U.S. Department of Justice data shows that women between the ages of 16-24 experience one of highest rates of violence by an intimate partner when compared to other age groups.

• 1/3 of high school and college students have already experienced an abusive dating relationship

• About 1 in 4 women are likely to be abused by a partner in their lifetime.

Dating Violence affects women in 95% of reported cases. However, men can experience the results of violence also, either directly or indirectly. Check out the link “For Men Only” for more information.

The Purple Ribbon has become a symbol of peace, support for those who have survived the violence, commemoration of those who have not been so fortunate, and hope that together, we can work to end this violence that claims thousands of lives each year.
