Did you feel unprotected by your high school or university? Did you have trouble finding Dating Violence Counseling or a Victim's Advocate? Did you press charges against your abuser, but felt the judicial system protected him more than you?
If so, you can make a difference by contacting your representatives and sharing your experience. Your state and local representative will not introduce/vote for legislation to protect victims of Dating Violence unless they are notified that it is an issue.
